An impressive 18th-century religious statue depicting Saint Anthony of Padua holding the Child Jesus, standing in a traditional devotional pose.
Saint Anthony is portrayed wearing his Franciscan habit, which is exceptionally richly decorated with gilt foliate and scrolling ornamentation over a dark ground.
The Child Jesus stands upon a small book or platform held by Saint Anthony, while the saint’s other hand is extended in a gesture of blessing or presentation.
The figure has a beautifully expressive face, individually modelled features and carefully rendered hair, with the decoration retaining considerable visual impact.
The statue has an attractive polychrome and gilded finish, with areas of age-related wear and loss to the painted and gilded surface that add to its antique character.
A striking example of ecclesiastical devotional sculpture, ideal for collectors of religious antiques, early sculpture and Catholic devotional art.
